The globalization of the wine industry has opened up so many more options for the consumer – from more grape varieties to more growing regions. The world of wine awaits anyone that is willing to seek out what it has to offer.

That being said – the consumer’s choices for sauvignon blanc aren’t limited to Franc, California or New Zealand anymore. Chile is proving it is a serious producer and so is New York – Long Island specifically. But if there’s one region that pulls of the best characteristics of each these days – it just may be South Africa.

Southern Right is a small producer specializing in sauvignon blanc and pinotage in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley just 2km from the cold South Atlantic Ocean. It’s cool climate produces wines that seem a world away from the image of South Africa’s big dry reds.This 2010 Southern Right Sauvignon Blanc shows stony, mineral rich aromas with bright lemon/lime element and classic gooseberry flavors. It’s rich without being heavy, just grassy enough to be recognized as sauvignon blanc and crisp enough without being tart. The combination of ripe fruit and mineral undertones solidifies this as a crowd pleasing white and a great buy at $15.
